SUMMARY

Teaches basic academic subjects to students requiring modified or adapted work, using special techniques or programs to improve behavior and/or academic achievement by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Teaches basic subjects such as reading and math, applying lesson techniques designed for short attention spans.

Administers achievement tests and evaluates test results to discover level of language and math skills.

Selects and teaches reading material and math problems related to the everyday life of individual student.

Confers with school counselors, school psychologists, and teaching staff to, obtain additional testing information and to gain insight on student behavioral disorders affecting the learning process.

Designs special help programs for low achievers and encourages parent-teacher cooperation

Attends professional meetings, writes reports and maintains records.

Discusses pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises 1-2 adult employees in the classroom, when appropriate. Carries out supervisory responsibilities related to monitoring students' behavior and activities in the classroom, on the playground, and during school events.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university.

At least three (3) years of successful teaching experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to speak grammatically correct English. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, curriculum guides, or state and school board regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, administrators, business and community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to perform basic arithmetic functions, work with and impart mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Indiana Elementary Teacher's License(s): Mild Disabilities or equivalent of Mildly Mentally Handicapped and Learning Disabilities.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, vision, distance, vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
