Peerless Pump, an Indianapolis based subsidiary of Grundfos , is seeking an experienced Hydraulic Design Engineer to join its Engineering Development Team.
The Hydraulic Design Engineer will be responsible for designing new hydraulic components and improving the performances of existing pump models with state-of-the-art performance and robustness. This position reports directly to the Director of Engineering and will operate out of the Indianapolis, IN facility.
Relocation for this position cannot be supported and qualified candidates must have authorization to work in the USA without support.

    The Hydraulic Design Engineer will include usage of advanced simulation and optimization techniques and will in addition require a high level of knowledge within fluid mechanics to enable optimal performance of our physical products as well as our digital offerings. This position interfaces with individuals at all levels in areas such as product engineering, foundry, machine shop, purchasing, assembly, testing, and quality. The Hydraulic Design Engineer will be responsible for conducting tests and maintaining product design and performance data for new product development or enhancements projects. Individual may act as project manager for assigned development projects.
    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:


    • Responsible for hydraulic development of hydraulic components like impellers and pump casing/bowl within development projects including simulations, review, verification and documentation


    • Support timely development of hydraulic components to ensure project time lines are achieved


    • Participate in scouting, investigation and implementation of new technologies relevant for hydraulic components, such as parametric design, simulation technologies as well as relevant additive manufacturing technologies


    • Support internal requests for subject matter expertise on hydraulic design, simulation and testing or on analysis of fluid mechanical phenomena present in our products


    • Develop and maintain design standards, specifications, guides, work instructions, and procedures related to hydraulic design


    • Conduct engineering calculations and analysis (Stresses, FEA, Torsional, Seismic, etc.) on projects per national codes and specifications, such as Hydraulic Institute (HI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ANSI, etc., to optimize product quality and minimize cost


    • Work within cross-functional teams to ensure compliance of new products by establishing project plans and manages projects to timely completion


    • Coordinate activities with Product Management, Operations and Quality to ensure design suitability for standards compliance and manufacturability


    • Maintain, develop, support, and participate in industry standards and 3rd party approvals, such as HI, UL, Factory Mutual (FM), NFPA, NSF, CE, DOE, etc.


    • Perform work, promote teamwork and communicate in conjunction with our culture and corporate standards (Safety/Environmental, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Communication, Internal Controls, etc.)


      Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


      • Solid technical background and knowledge within fluid mechanics, turbomachinery and numerical simulation techniques such as CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)


      • Experience in finite element analysis


      • Experience with hydraulic design of pumps or other turbomachinery components


      • Solid programming skills (Python or similar preferred)


      • Proven collaboration, presentation and communication skills


      • Proficient using 3D modeling/2D drafting (CATIA and SolidWorks preferred)


      • Task and deadline focused with a strong work ethic and multi-tasking ability. Must be self-motivated, possessing good judgment and discretion


      • Able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment taking personal responsibility for assignment and product line


      • Excellent verbal and written skills; fluent at reading, speaking, & writing English, including technical vocabulary


      • Able to travel (Domestically and Internationally) approximately 5% of time


      • Capable of mobility in a manufacturing environment


      • Able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Able to stand or sit for prolonged period


        Education and Experience:


        • Four year technical or engineering degree or equivalent experience in a manufacturing environment required.


        • Five (5)+ years of professional experience in the field of Hydraulics


        • M.SC or PhD in Fluid Mechanics preferred


        • Knowledge of design processes & tools (e.g. CFD, Rapid Prototyping, DFMA, FMEA, Design of Experiments, etc.).


        • Knowledge of 3D parametric design and numerical optimization techniques and validation of simulation results by physical experiments


        • Understanding of pump/rotating equipment principals, construction, hydraulics, application of products, and accessories a plus.


        • Knowledge of international standards a plus, e.g., HI, UL, FM, NFPA, NSF, CE, DOE, etc.
