Job Description:
Support the Air Force Laboratory (AFRL) Sensor's Directorate
Integrated Photonic Circuits (IPC) Team to help advance R&D
efforts in the field of integrated photonics and microwave
photonics. Primary responsibilities are to lead the electronic
development for the control, interfacing, and enhancement of
photonic sub-systems. The successful candidate will collaborate
with a multi-disciplinary team on the design, integration,
assembly, and characterization of hybrid electronic/photonic
prototypes. Electronic development involves mixed-signal circuit
design, programing of microcontrollers and/or FPGA implementation.
Applications focus on microwave photonics, atomic systems, and
sensing. The successful candidate is expected to lead electronic
development to functionalize photonic sub-systems. Electronic
support includes biasing of photonic devices, feed-back control,
phase-locking, opto-electronic read-out, processing, and
user-interfacing. Developed prototypes may be self-standing or
embedded in larger system architectures. Opportunities also exist
to contribute to exploratory research projects including the design
of integrated electronic/photonic circuits and the advancement of
microwave photonic processing using high-speed ADCs, FPGAs, and
ASICs. Additional responsibilities include characterization,
documentation, briefing reports, and project planning. Required •
Expertise designing mixed signal embedded systems • Experience
using circuit design software (e.g. Eagle, Altium); •
Self-motivated, with strong communication skills and the ability to
work both independently and in a team environment across different
disciplines. • Strong work ethic with integrity, dedication,
dependability, and enthusiasm. • B.S. with 2 years of relevant
professional experience. • Ability to obtain SECRET security
clearance Desired Experience • Experience programming
micro-controllers, FPGAs or ASICs • Deep understanding of feedback
control including phase-locked loops, PID, and PDH. • Working
knowledge of RF components and concepts • Extensive experience
programing with C , Python, and /or MATLAB. • Working knowledge of
photonic components (e.g. lasers, modulator, detectors, etc.) •
M.S. in electrical engineering, physics, or other related fields
with 2 years of relevant professional experience. About AFRL: The
Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) addresses the basic and
applied research needs and interests of the US Air Force.
Headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Ohio, AFRL
includes world-class scientists, engineers, technologists, post
docs, and visiting researchers all focused on cutting-edge
technology, including work with aerodynamics, applied mathematics,
electronics, engine design, Client materials, optics/photonics, etc
