Veteran Health Administration - Veteran Health Indiana We have
an exceptional opportunity for a Cardiovascular Surgery Physician
Assistant to join Veteran Health Indiana at the Richard L.
Roudebush VA Medical Center located in Indianapolis, IN. The
Cardiovascular Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for
the care and administrative needs of the cardiovascular surgery
patient, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition to
the basic clinical skills expected of all PA's in surgical service
(H&P's, ordering of pertinent labs and diagnostics, and pre and
post-operative patient care), the PA who fills this position is
required to have surgical experience to perform open and endoscopic
vein harvest, sternal closure & autonomous sternal exposure,
independence in placement of chest tubes, thoracentesis, and
intra-aortic balloon pump independent of the attending physician.
In addition to non-operative clinical responsibilities in the
inpatient and outpatient settings, the PA will first and second
assist the attending physician in cardiac and thoracic surgical
procedures. The PA also functions as a coordinator between the
attending physicians and other team members and will establish and
maintain relations with other key services service lines involved
in care delivery. The combination of experience and education
desired for this position is five years of professional practice as
a PA and a Master's Degree from a PA training program accredited by
the ARC-PA or in a health-related field of study. The ideal
candidate has a minimum of four years of experience in
Cardiothoracic Surgery. The PA must also show current and
continuous certification by the National Commission on
Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Examples of Clinical
- Admission History and Physicals, preoperative evaluations,
orders, progress notes, aftercare plans and discharge
- Manage postoperative cardiothoracic surgical patients in the
- Provide medical education/counseling of patients and their
families with a focus on excellent customer service.
- Exhibit leadership and primary responsibility for patient
admissions and coordinate medical care of patients with the
Cardiovascular Surgery team.
- Perform endoscopic and open vein and artery harvest independent
of the attending surgeon or cardiac resident or fellow.
- Assist the surgeon in the operating room - including prepping
and draping, and first and second assisting for cardiac and/or
thoracic surgical procedures.
- Demonstrate the ability to diagnose conditions that require the
insertion of pleural chest tubes and perform chest tube
- Participate in discharge planning and coordinate clinical needs
of the patient with outside facilities and care givers, and promote
- Demonstrate leadership and initiative in representing
Cardiovascular Surgery service when interacting with other
disciplines within the VA system.
- Coordinate and facilitate the necessary workup and application
process for patients who need consideration for heart
- Attend meetings for CME and stay current on research that
applies to Cardiovascular Surgery. Apply current evidence based
concepts to clinical practice in order to best care for the
