DepartmentENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY - I (IN-ENGT-IUINA)Department InformationThe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers BS degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence, as well as MS and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering.Job SummaryThe lab technician plays an integral part in delivering quality laboratory experiences to the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) students. The technician interacts regularly with a diverse group of ECE students, staff, faculty, campus partners in other departments, and vendors. Among other duties, the lab technician makes sure the electrical and computer engineering labs are properly supplied and all equipment is in working order.Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Responsible for undergraduate electrical engineering and computer engineering lab setups.
  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensures safety in laboratory operation.
  • Ensures lab security.
  • Keeps inventory of all department laboratory equipment.
  • Files reports and completes miscellaneous paperwork.
  • Performs other department specific duties assigned by the ECE department chair.General Responsibilities
    • Monitors and provides support to faculty and students in educational resource facility (such as laboratory, learning/technology center, etc.) in support of educational and learning outcomes.
    • Operates various instruments and/or machinery (some may be restricted from student use), assists students using permitted equipment, and provides instruction, training, and oversight for safe operation; often responsible for designing, fabricating, and/or machining necessary components for student and/or faculty projects.
    • Collaborates and makes recommendations on the design of experiments and learning experiences that support faculty and student education and/or research project outcomes; sets up experiments and/or experiences (including equipment, etc.); prepares all materials, samples, equipment, and devices needed; assists students and/or faculty with safely and properly operating equipment, tools, etc.
    • Provides effective demonstrations and experiments to showcase processes, equipment capabilities, and/or features; assists in developing instructional and training materials for proper and safe use of the facility, equipment, and/or tools.
    • Implements a preventive maintenance program that will keep equipment ready for instructional and research project utilization; cleans, maintains, and properly stores all equipment and supplies; keeps area(s) cleaned and organized; analyzes new equipment as it comes to market for possible implementation and stays abreast of new processes used in industry to sustain state-of-the art learning and/or research experiences; ensures security of facility, equipment, and supplies.
    • Ensures educational resource facility is functional and safe at all times; enforces safety standards and clean-up procedures; performs basic preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of equipment; identifies potential problem areas and recommends courses of action.
    • Develops and maintains a database of cost-effective sources for necessary materials and supplies; coordinates financial planning and assists in budget review and preparation; orders and procures materials, supplies, and equipment on a timely basis.
    • Collaborates with and provides support to faculty to ensure educational resource facility creates desired student experiences and achieves educational objectives; schedules and supports academic, research, and outreach activities (such as facilitating tours, presentations, or demonstrations).
    • May supervise, train, and manage student employees and/or less experienced staff; supervises and assists students with project-related experiments and/or experiences (such as senior designs, research projects, etc.).QualificationsEDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCERequired
      • Bachelor's degree (preferably in a relevant field)Preferred
        • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or computer engineering or
        • Associate Electrical Engineering degree or an Associate Electrical Engineering Technology degree with 4 years of working experience as an electrical technicianCombinations of related education and experience may be considered SKILLSRequired

The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
