Overview:
Paralegals perform substantive billable legal work under the
direction of one or more attorneys in the office. A Paralegal's
goal is to relieve the attorney(s) she/he works for of a portion of
the tasks involved in the practice of law, so the attorneys can
focus on more substantive and valuable tasks.
A Paralegal provides billable service to clients at a lower
billable rate than an attorney, providing a benefit to the clients
of the firm.
Reporting Relationship:
Paralegals perform their duties under the direction of one or more
attorneys to whom they may be assigned. Paralegals' employment
relationship with the Firm is managed by the Office
Administrator.
Responsibilities:
Aid lawyers in trial preparation by preparing and organizing
exhibits, organizing and coordinating witnesses, conducting
research on legal articles, and assisting with client meetings and
filing motions
Draft subpoenas and coordinate with process servers
Prepare legal documents, correspondence, and pleadings such as
complaints, interrogatories, subpoenas, deposition notices,
pretrial orders, legal briefs, and affidavits, under the
supervision of a lawyer
Organize our case filing systems to ensure all documents are
properly sorted and easy to locate, and other administrative duties
as needed
Conduct interviews with clients to gather information about their
legal issues
Qualifications:
Must have great time-management skills, and organizational
skills
3 years of experience in legal services under an attorney or lawyer
in a law firm setting
ABA-approved paralegal certificate program such as an Associate's
degree or proprietary school program in paralegal studies,
Bachelor's degree desired
Strong oral and written communication skills
Completion of a nationally-accredited paralegal program strongly
preferred
